The Face Behind the Front Door of the Beekeeper (part 2)

A meadow with willows and clover, an orchard full of apples in the making, a roadside with cornflowers, field thistles and dandelions. For bees, all of this is a source of nutrition. Bees do better in cities than on land, which says something about our agriculture and food consumption. But also in cities we see more and more tiled gardens or gardens with artificial grass. There is no more air in the soil and soil life suffocated.

The environment is impoverished, scraped, petrified, salivated, poisoned and there is too little diversity of plants.
Isabelle is happy to give you the following tips:
Greening !! remove artificial grass and tiles from your garden and sow or plant flowers, shrubs or trees. Naturally organic and not coated with poison.
Place a clover field because rainwater is absorbed again.
Roof gardens also absorb rainwater, isolate the house, regulate the climate in a city and the proper planting can supply nectar and pollen to insects and birds.
Choose your garden or terrace for bee-friendly plants, shrubs and trees.
Willow, fruit, maple, hawthorn, horse chestnut, acacia, lime, privet, ivy, vine and hazel. Clover, bluebells and cornflowers. The bee people will thank you.

Remember that a tree offers much more surface to blossom than a plant.
Bees and bumblebees love herbs such as rosemary, oregano, thyme, sage and lavender.

Immediately stop using pesticides and fertilizer.
Spray the louse in plants with the plant spray or garden hose. This way birds also have some food. Is not it strange that bird food is in the supermarket and that caterpillars, lice etc. are fought?
Note which garden center you enter. Before you know it, you are sitting with a pot plant full of poison and fertilizer “to love nature”.
Mens en Tuin, located at Hillenraadweg 35 in The Hague, is a biodynamic urban farm with a nursery of more than 2000 m2. In the kitchen garden shop they sell biodynamic seeds, plants, earth and manure. The nursery specializes in biodynamic bee and butterfly plants.

Via you can order non-toxic flower bulbs.
Eat organic or biodynamic products such as vegetables, fruit and dairy. This form of agriculture is focused on life and therefore better for us and for the future. The farmers provide herbaceous and flowery fields where insects are completely at their own. Moreover, these products also taste much better.

Finally, a few home-garden and bee facts from Isabelle:

  • For 1 kg of honey, honeybees make about 1 million flights.
  • They collect about 30 kg of pollen during the pollination of the flowers per year.
  • Thirty percent of our food depends on pollination by bees.
  • At the height of their development, a powerful bee colony can collect about 300 kilos of honey in the summer.
  • The record number of visits of a honeybee is 3000 flowers per day! She flies from flower to flower and therefore does not need 3000 flights.
  • The bee can fly 10 km on a full tank (40 mg nectar) and flies no further than 2 to 4 km from the nest to get nectar.
