Do you know that house numbers were invented in the 18th century? They gave governments a firmer grasp on their citizens, to send them assessments and calls for military service. Anton Tantner wrote a book about it: “House Numbers” (Reaktion Books, 2014). It is illustrated with 118 photographs. The picture on the left is not one of them, it was taken on Soendastraat. Black digits on a white background, painted on the wall. Neat and inexpensive. It seems to be typical for The Hague Before World War II (www.zoekplaatjes.nl keyword: huisnummers).
